Frequently asked questions
Here are answers to Frequently Asked Questions.
I want to donate to the Iowa Grand Chapter. Can I still do that?
Absolutely! Keep in mind that those donations are needed and appreciated. Consult with your tax preparer for clarification regarding the tax deductible status of your donation.
Why are donations to the Special Projects of Iowa Grand Chapter considered tax deductible?
Because they are going to one or more entities recognized by the IRS as 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. Grand Chapter of Iowa is a 501(c)(8), meaning it does not pay income tax and is classified as a fraternal charitable organization.
So my donations to the Grand Chapter specifying the Special Projects are tax-deductible, whether I pay them to my Chapter, to the Grand Chapter, or to the Foundation. How will my donation to the Eastern Star Foundation of Iowa benefit the operating fund of the Grand Chapter of Iowa?
It will not benefit the operating fund of the Grand Chapter.
Why is the Eastern Star Foundation of Iowa only now being established?
Federal and state tax legislation regarding nonprofit organizations has changed dramatically over the past several decades. While not new, the tax-deductible qualification may exclude donations to 501(c)(8) fraternal non-profit organizations but include 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit businesses and organizations. Please discuss this with your tax preparer.
Is the Eastern Star Foundation of Iowa only for Eastern Star members?
Anyone may donate to the Eastern Star Foundation of Iowa. Membership is not required.
